At LANDMARK SOUND LABS,
we not only measure everyday acoustic phenomena for our Clients,
we also design and manufacture custom test systems to meet the
specific requirements of their measurement applications. These
systems often include a testing enclosure specifically designed
to meet space restrictions or device dimensions. Special care
is taken in the design to isolate the test chamber from any unwanted
external noises, while minimizing the internal acoustic effects
of often suboptimal size.
One particularly
challenging test application was measuring bearing noise from
pneumatic dental tools ... on the manufucturing floor of a ballbearing
plant. While standard isolation techniques demand an airtight
seal, these devices leak air, thus pressurizing any sealed enclosure
and seriously affecting the output of standard test microphones.
To accomodate these constraints we customed an exhaust system
to an optimally dimensioned enclosure, allowing air to flow out
while greatly reducing sound transmission back in at the frequencies
of interest. Combined with a computerized frequency-selective
test system, accurate and repeatable measurements were available
at several worldwide sites.
